Asian American Stories – A letter from Diana Ding, Founder and Chair of Asian American Stories

Dear Friends, Storytellers, Committee Members, Sponsors, VIPs, Volunteers and Partners,

I extend my sincerest gratitude to each of you for your steadfast support of the Asian American Stories Video Contest 2024.

Growing up in a Chinese family, I learned the importance of being humble and developed a tendency to keep my stories to myself. This sentiment is shared by many Asian American households where success is often met with modesty and struggles are silently endured. I greatly admire those who can easily share their stories, and I always hope that we can share our Asian stories as well. For the past twenty years, I have devoted myself to telling these stories through various media. The challenges brought about by the pandemic have highlighted a surge in Asian hate crimes and misunderstandings, which has prompted us to take action to bring diverse communities together for this cause.

In response, Ding Ding TV initiated the inaugural Video Contest, “In Time of COVID-19,” in 2020, showcasing stories of resilience and compassion amidst adversity. Building upon this momentum, we launched the second contest, “I Love My Community,” in 2021. Finally, in 2023, we established the Asian American Stories Video Contest to amplify Asian contributions and culture while fostering understanding and empathy.

As the founder of this initiative, I am profoundly honored by our communities’ overwhelming participation in this empowering storytelling journey.

We have received 72 remarkable stories, ranging from seasoned filmmakers to first-time storytellers, with contributions coming not only from North and South California but also from Washington DC, Alaska, Massachusetts, Boston, and more. This contest transcends geographical boundaries and competition; it serves as a celebration of identity, culture, and community. By sharing our narratives, we honor our heritage and strive to bridge divides and foster a more inclusive society. This year’s contest theme, “All of Us Belong Here,” has inspired poignant narratives and a resounding call to end hate and embrace inclusivity. Your presence at this event underscores your commitment to amplifying Asian American voices and standing against discrimination.

I offer my heartfelt appreciation to our Asian American Story Supporter. Your contributions have been pivotal in shaping the success of this event and advocating for diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

As we celebrate diversity, unity, and the transformative power of storytelling, let’s ask, “What’s next?” I invite you to join us in sharing your ideas in our ongoing mission to share our stories with the world and work together to be a strong voice in our nation.

With deepest gratitude,

Diana Weiping Ding
