Preserving Chinese American history has been Gerrye Wong’s mantra throughout her life.
A fourth generation Chinese American, as a teacher she presented annual Chinese culture workshops for the San Jose Moreland School District. As a volunteer, she co-founded the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project which built the Museum of Chinese American History in San Jose in 1991. As a writer, she co- authored 2 books on Chinese Americans and wrote a column chronicling Asian American events and personalities in Asian Week for 20 years.
Growing up in San Jose, she got her first typewriter at 8, and self taught, promptly became president of the Alan Ladd Fan Club, and won the Modern Screen Magazine Award for publishing the best Fan Club Magazine in the 1940s. Moving to Oakland, CA, she attended Oakland High School, where she honed further her journalistic skills being the Editor of the High School newspaper, the Aegis. A graduate of UC Berkeley and University of Michigan, she was a reading specialist and elementary school teacher for 30 years in Oakland and San Jose.
Married to Fortune Cookie Factory owner and engineer Calvin Wong, she professes she did NOT write any fortunes, but did wrIte a column titled ON THE SCENE for the English language newspaper ASIAN WEEK targeted to Asian American readership published in San Francisco for over 20 years. Her two co-authored books, were written on behalf of service organizations she believed in their mission. They were Eternal Spring for Self Help for the Elderly, and the Images of America series book Chinese in San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley for the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project.
She continues her love of writing by writing a bi-monthly column for website www.dingdingtv.com on community news, and travel destination stories, another of her favorite pastimes. She also is a guest contributing writer for Gentry Magazine, a publication for Greater San Francisco Bay Area readers.
A mother of two and proud grandmother of 5, she continues to be active in non-profit organizations. She co-founded the Chi Am Circle in 1965, an Asian American women’s social service organization which recently celebrated its 55th anniversary. She co-founded the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project which opened the Museum of Chinese American History in History San Jose park in 1991, continuing as the CHCP Trustee. She has served as a Board Director for Chinese Historical Society of America, Self Help for the Elderly, Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, Chi Am Circle, Chinese Historical and Cultural Project of Santa Clara Valley.
