Historic Global March for Universal Basic Income Set for October 27, 2019 in San Francisco
– Universal Basic Income is endorsed by experts, economists and Nobel Prize
winners across the political spectrum as a solution to end poverty and inequality
exacerbated by globalization, automation and other factors.
– The Income Movement invites all supporters of Universal Basic Income to join a
historic march for economic justice for the millions of people left behind in today’s current economy.
– The Basic Income March is taking place on 5 continents, in 24 cities across the
globe. Cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, Orlando, Salt
Lake City, Seoul and Toronto will begin the march on October 26, 2019. The
weekend festivities will conclude in San Francisco at SF Civic Center Plaza on
October 27, 2019. The San Francisco Basic Income March will begin at 12:30 pm
and will help set the stage for a rally for presidential candidate Andrew Yang that follows directly at 4:00 pm, at the same location.

SAN FRANCISCO, California. October. 21, 2019. The Income Movement has organized a
historic march for Universal Basic Income (“UBI”) in San Francisco on October 27, 2019. The
Basic Income March is a non-partisan, people-powered movement demanding that our
economy evolve to meet the challenges of the 21
st century. As a stronghold of innovative
thinking and progressive values, San Francisco is the ideal location for the final destination for
this global march. Leaders from social justice organizations, thought leaders in UBI, and
congressional candidates and religious leaders will be among those joining thousands of
supporters to march and demand economic justice for the millions left behind in today’s current
economy. Through citizen engagement and activism, the global Basic Income March is
changing the conversation around UBI and its viable as a solution to end poverty. UBI will
improve the lives of millions around the world and enable a healthier and more just society.

Universal Basic Income is the concept that all individuals should receive a fixed income,
regardless of their circumstances, to provide for their basic needs. While the concept is not
new, it has received renewed attention due to the changing role of the workforce in an age of automation and globalization.
UBI is not a tax or government-sponsored welfare; it is a dividend based on the productivity
of the economy that is powered by its people. It has the potential to end poverty in the U.S.
and streamline the provision of social services, which is why the concept has growing support from global communities.
The idea of UBI has been part of American discourse since the Founding Fathers. During the
civil rights movement, it was championed by leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. A UBI bill
did pass the U.S. House of Representatives twice. The push for UBI continues today as we
grapple with the unprecedented impact automation will have on the American workforce.
Businessmen like Elon Musk recognize the need for UBI, as do Presidential Candidates like
Andrew Yang (D). Numerous Economics Nobel Prize winners including recent winners Abhijit
Banerjee and Esther Duflo are also in favor of UBI.
The Alaska Permanent Fund has had UBI in the form of an oil dividend for more than 40
years. Similarly, the Qualla Boundary Tribe provides a dividend to its members based on
casino profits. Recently Stockton, California and other regions have implemented UBI pilot
programs. These studies have validated the benefits of UBI, showing positive results in the health and well-being of recipients.
A Universal Basic Income of $1,000 USD per month for each citizen over 18 years old would
allow individuals to meet their basic needs like housing and nutrition, better withstand
unexpected bills (e.g., car repairs, medical costs, etc.), spur entrepreneurship, reduce crime
and homelessness, and empower people to leave exploitative jobs or relationships. It would
help support individuals like at-home caretakers whose contributions may not be
economically valued in our current system. UBI lifts up the most disenfranchised in our
society. It is a key step towards economic and social justice for all.
